What is passive fire protection?
Passive Fire Protection (PFP) is a provision made for fire safety that, during normal conditions, is inactive or “passive”. In the event of a fire situation, the inert system becomes active to contain or slow the spread of fire. PFP is an integral part of structural fire protection in a building. It is designed to allow sufficient time for the safe evacuation of all the buildings’ occupants and the arrival of the Fire Services. There is a duty of care on the person responsible for Fire Safety to ensure the safety of the Emergency Services who may enter the building during the Fire Event. The duty of care must ensure the minimum spreading of flames, smoke, and hot gases and to ensure the building remains as safe as possible for as long as possible.
